Before the Manger: Jesus in the Beginning

📖 John 1:1–5 — The Word, the Life, the Light

1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2. He was in the beginning with God.
3. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
4. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

🧠 Context & Overview

So the Gospel of John does not open with a genealogy or a nativity. It opens with a grand declaration! This isn’t just the story of a man named Jesus but the empowering and wonderful story of the Savior of the world – who was not only with God, but was God and stepping into our own human history.

John 1:1-5 echos Genesis 1:1 connecting Jesus to the very beginning of the world and even beyond that.

This tells us: Jesus didn’t begin in Bethlehem — He always was.

💡 Key Observations

🔤 

“The Word” — Greek: Logos (λόγος)

• More than a name, Logos means reason, order, message, expression.
• Jesus is the perfect communication of God — His heart, His mind, His will — made flesh (John 1:14).

🧱 Eternal & Divine

• “Was with God” = coexistence
• “Was God” = equality

---

🛠️  Creator

• Jesus was not merely present for the creation – He was the one through whom all things were made and if not for Him nothing would be made.

💡The Light of Men

• Truth

Jesus didn’t simply, quietly enter the world – He pierced it like a 💡bright💡 beam of light in a blackened room delivering spiritual truth into a dark and fallen world.

🌌 The verb “shines” is present tense in Greek:

➤ “shines” = φαίνει (phainei) — ongoing, active shining

➤ It’s not past tense. It means: Jesus’ light still shines.

🌑 “…and the darkness did not comprehend it.”

• From the Greek κατέλαβεν (katelaben) — meaning:
  • to grasp, to understand, to comprehend
• This would mean:➤ The darkness (the world) did not understand or receive Christ.
• ➤ This fits with John 1:10–11: “The world did not know Him… His own did not receive Him.”
