🙌 Exodus 22:28–31 — Reverence for God and Sacred Things

²⁸ “You shall not revile God, nor curse a ruler of your people. ²⁹ You shall not delay to offer the first of your ripe produce and your juices. The firstborn of your sons you shall give to Me. ³⁰ Likewise you shall do with your oxen and your sheep. It shall be with its mother seven days; on the eighth day you shall give it to Me. ³¹ And you shall be holy men to Me: you shall not eat meat torn by beasts in the field; you shall throw it to the dogs.”

🧠 Context & Overview

This closing section of the chapter zooms out again — from social laws to spiritual reverence. God reminds Israel to honor Him, respect authority, and live holy lives even in their day-to-day actions.

It’s a reminder that everything — from words, to worship, to what they eat — matters in their covenant relationship with God.

💡 Key Observations

🗣️ Honor God & Authority (v.28)

• “You shall not revile God” — speaks of blasphemy or showing contempt.
• “Nor curse a ruler” — God’s people must also respect those in leadership.

⚠️ Words matter — dishonoring God or His appointed leaders was seen as dangerous rebellion.

🎁 Offering the First and Best (vv.29–30)

• Israelites were not to delay giving God:
  • The first of their crops
  • The firstborn of their children and animals
• Firstborn sons were redeemed (not sacrificed — see Exodus 13:13).
• Animals stayed with their mothers for 7 days — this was both humane and respectful.

👉 God wanted offerings that were timely, thoughtful, and honoring — not leftovers or afterthoughts.

🐺 Purity in Daily Life (v.31)

• “You shall be holy men to Me” — a summary call to live distinctly.
• Even what they ate mattered: they must not eat animals killed by predators (which could be unclean, diseased, or defiled by blood).

💡 Holiness wasn’t just for the tabernacle — it was for the field, the kitchen, and the heart.
