🌿 Psalm 5 🌿
🌅 Overview 🌅
Psalm 5 is a morning prayer of David. Unlike Psalm 4, which closes the day in trust, Psalm 5 opens the day by turning immediately toward God. David is surrounded by deceitful and violent people, yet instead of surrendering to bitterness or fear, he directs his voice heavenward at dawn.
This Psalm contrasts:
- the holiness of God ✨
- the wickedness of sinful humanity 🌑
- the refuge found by those who trust in the Lord 🌿
David does not merely ask for protection. He asks to be led in righteousness.

🌿 Prayer for Guidance 🌿
To the Chief Musician. With flutes. A Psalm of David.
1 Give ear to my words, O LORD,
Consider my meditation.
2 Give heed to the voice of my cry,
My King and my God,
For to You I will pray.
3 My voice You shall hear in the morning, O LORD;
In the morning I will direct it to You,
And I will look up.
4 For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness,
Nor shall evil dwell with You.
5 The boastful shall not stand in Your sight;
You hate all workers of iniquity.
6 You shall destroy those who speak falsehood;
The LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.
7 But as for me, I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy;
In fear of You I will worship toward Your holy temple.
8 Lead me, O LORD, in Your righteousness because of my enemies;
Make Your way straight before my face.
9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth;
Their inward part is destruction;
Their throat is an open tomb;
They flatter with their tongue.
10 Pronounce them guilty, O God!
Let them fall by their own counsels;
Cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions,
For they have rebelled against You.
11 But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You;
Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them;
Let those also who love Your name
Be joyful in You.
12 For You, O LORD, will bless the righteous;
With favor You will surround him as with a shield.
🌿 Themes in Psalm 5 🌿
☀️ Morning Prayer
David begins his day with prayer before anything else.
- “In the morning I will direct it to You”
- Prayer is intentional here
- David “looks up” with expectation
This is not casual religion. It is dependence.
✨ God’s Holiness
Psalm 5 strongly emphasizes that God is holy and cannot fellowship with evil.
David says:
- wickedness cannot dwell with God
- falsehood is judged
- deceit and violence grieve the Lord
The Psalm reminds believers that God’s goodness is not soft tolerance of sin. His holiness is pure and righteous.
🌿 Mercy and Worship
Verse 7 is beautiful because David approaches God not based on personal merit but on mercy.
“In the multitude of Your mercy…”
Even David, king of Israel, enters humbly.
🛡️ Divine Protection
The Psalm closes with joy and security.
God:
- defends His people
- blesses the righteous
- surrounds them “as with a shield”
The image is one of complete covering and favor.
✨ Traces of Christ in Psalm 5 ✨
Jesus perfectly fulfilled the righteousness David longed for.
- Christ often prayed early in the morning
(Mark 1:35) - Jesus is completely holy and without evil
(Hebrews 4:15) - Christ is the righteous King to whom believers cry
- Through Jesus, believers enter God’s presence by mercy rather than personal worth
Verse 8 especially points forward beautifully:
“Lead me, O LORD, in Your righteousness…”
Jesus later declared:
“I am the way…”
— John 14:6
🏺 Historical and Cultural Background 🏺
The inscription says this Psalm was written:
“To the Chief Musician. With flutes.”
This indicates Psalm 5 was intended for public worship with musical accompaniment.
Flutes were often associated with softer or reflective musical settings. The Psalm’s movement from prayer to confidence fits that atmosphere well.
David likely wrote during a season of opposition and betrayal, themes that appear frequently in his life:
- Saul’s pursuit
- political enemies
- betrayal within Israel
- false accusations
The Psalm reflects the reality of living faithfully among corrupt people while still trusting God.
📚 Key Word Studies 📚
🌿 “Meditation” — הָגִיג (hagig)
Meaning:
- murmuring
- groaning
- quiet pondering
David asks God to hear even the inward movements of his heart.
✨ “Mercy” — חֶסֶד (chesed)
One of the richest Hebrew words in Scripture.
Meaning:
- covenant love
- steadfast lovingkindness
- faithful mercy
David approaches God because of His faithful covenant love.
🛡️ “Shield” — צִנָּה (tsinnah)
A large protective shield covering the whole body.
The image in verse 12 is not partial protection. God’s favor surrounds the righteous completely.
🌿 Reflection 🌿
Psalm 5 teaches believers how to begin the day:
- with prayer
- with reverence
- with honesty
- with trust
David does not pretend evil does not exist. He sees corruption clearly. Yet he refuses to become consumed by it.
Instead, he lifts his eyes upward.
There is deep wisdom in that. 🌅💙
