The Way of the Righteous and the End of the Ungodly

NKJV
1 Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
3 He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.
4 The ungodly are not so,
But are like the chaff which the wind drives away.
5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the ungodly shall perish.

The image of the tree in Psalm 1 has settled deeply into my heart because I recognize something of myself within it. Its roots stretch downward through hidden places beneath the soil, yet they continually reach toward the rivers of water that sustain its life. So much of faith is like this. The deepest work God performs within us is often unseen by others. Prayer whispered in weariness, meditation upon His word in the quiet hours of the night, returning to Him again and again through every season of life… these things sink roots deeper into the soul. His law is not merely something I read, but something that has become woven into my thoughts day and night, abiding within me like living water beneath the surface. 🌿

I have often wrestled with the words, “whatever he does shall prosper,” because there are seasons of life that do not feel prosperous at all. Yet perhaps Psalm 1 is not describing a life of constant outward success, but a life that does not wither because it remains rooted in God. I am reminded of the Japanese rose that blooms so beautifully in springtime, filling the air with fragrance for a brief season before returning to its quiet green form for the rest of the year. Though its blossoms fade, the plant itself remains alive in the shade, silently preparing for the season appointed to it once again. In much the same way, the righteous life is not constant blooming, but faithful abiding. Fruit comes in its season, and the soul that remains planted beside the rivers of water continues to live even through the quieter seasons. 🌹🌊🌳

Perhaps the deepest roots are formed in the quiet seasons, when no blossoms are visible and only God sees the hidden work beneath the soil. May we remain planted beside His living waters, trusting Him to sustain us faithfully through every season He appoints. 🌿🌊
