What Does it Mean to be Close to Jesus? Part 3

💧 How Do I Stay Close When I Feel Distant?

😔 1. Feeling distant from Jesus doesn’t mean you’ve failed.

Even the strongest believers feel far from God sometimes.

Closeness isn’t measured by emotion—it’s measured by presence. And Jesus never leaves.

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

—Hebrews 13:5

There are seasons when our hearts go quiet, when prayers feel flat, or when we just… don’t sense Him. That doesn’t mean He’s far. It means we’re human—and sometimes, tired.

🔍 2. There are different reasons we feel distant. Some need healing. Some need rest. Some need repentance.

Here are a few possible causes:

  • Distraction – The noise of life crowds out our awareness of Him.
  • Disobedience – Sin left unaddressed puts a wall between us and His nearness.
  • Disappointment – We hoped for something, and when it didn’t come, we pulled back without realizing.
  • Dryness – Sometimes we just hit a season of silence… like a spiritual winter.

Understanding why we feel distant helps us respond with wisdom and love—not shame.

🌲 3. Closeness returns through quiet, not striving.

Trying harder won’t fix distance. But stillness will.

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

—Psalm 46:10

“Even when you feel far, Jesus is still holding you. You haven’t slipped away. His love hasn’t loosened. You still belong.”

✨ 4. Jesus longs for you to draw near again—He’s not angry.

When we feel far from God, sometimes shame tells us to stay away.

But Jesus doesn’t meet distance with condemnation—He meets it with invitation.

“Return to Me,” says the Lord, “and I will return to you.”

—Malachi 3:7

His voice isn’t saying, “Where have you been?”

It’s saying, “I missed you. Come sit with Me again.”

💔 Why Isn’t Jesus Angry When We Pull Away?

🌿 1. Because His love is not wounded pride—it’s pure, self-giving love.

When people pull away from us, we often feel rejectedhurt, or insulted—even if they didn’t mean to. It pokes at our wounds and our fear of not being wanted.

But Jesus doesn’t love with ego or insecurity.

He loves from perfect fullness.

“Love suffers long and is kind… it is not provoked, thinks no evil.”

—1 Corinthians 13:4–5

He’s not asking, “Why did you turn away from Me?” because He’s offended.

He’s asking, “Why are you hurting alone? I want to help.”

🕊️ 2. Because He sees the reason beneath the distance.

He knows you didn’t wake up one day and say, “I don’t want You anymore.”

He knows:

  • You’re tired
  • You’re afraid
  • You’re distracted
  • You’re overwhelmed
  • You’re grieving
  • Or you’re not sure what you feel at all

And instead of saying, “That’s no excuse,” He says,

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matt. 11:28)

He sees what others can’t see. He understands the “why,” and He loves you through it.

🔥 3. Because His heart is mercy before judgment.

He could be angry. He has every right.

But He chooses mercy first.

“The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.”

—Psalm 103:8

He withholds anger, not because sin is small—but because love is greater.

He doesn’t want to scare you back. He wants to win you back.

💛 4. Because He already took the pain of our distance on Himself.

When we pull away, it does cause sorrow. It caused Gethsemane. It caused Calvary.

But instead of turning away in wrath, Jesus took all that grief and bore it on the cross.

“He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities…”

—Isaiah 53:5

So now—on this side of the cross—He doesn’t come at you in anger.

He comes with open arms.

🕊️ 5. Small acts of return reopen the closeness.

Coming back to closeness doesn’t always feel dramatic.

It happens in little moments:

  • Opening your Bible even when it feels silent
  • Saying His name in the quiet
  • Going outside and noticing His beauty
  • Telling Him, “I’m still here. I want You.”

These are the moments that soften your heart and restore the nearness.

“The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart.”

—Psalm 34:18

🌅 6. Even your longing is evidence that He’s near.

You wouldn’t miss Him if He weren’t already drawing you.

That ache you feel to be close again? It’s a sign of life. Of love. Of relationship still breathing.

“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him.”

—John 6:44

Your desire is a whisper from Him saying, “I’m here. Come closer.”
