💬 “How Do I Hear His Voice?”

Let’s begin with this truth:

📖 1. Jesus still speaks today.

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”

—John 10:27, NKJV

Jesus didn’t stop speaking when the Bible was finished.

He speaks today—through His Word, by His Spirit, and into the hearts of those who belong to Him.

But hearing Him isn’t always about volume or even clarity—it’s about relationship.

Sheep don’t follow a voice they don’t recognize… but over time, they come to know it by heart.

🌿 2. The primary way Jesus speaks is through Scripture.

His voice is never separated from His Word.

If you want to hear Him clearly, go first to what He has already said.

  • The Holy Spirit brings Scripture to life, speaking it into our current moment.
  • Sometimes it comes as comfort, sometimes as conviction.
  • Often, it’s just a quiet knowing: “That verse is for me today.”

“The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.”

—John 6:63

🌬️ 3. He speaks gently by His Spirit.

When we’re walking with Jesus, His Spirit abides in us—and speaks to us.

  • Through a quiet impression
  • A sense of warning
  • A feeling of peace in the middle of confusion
  • A moment of clarity we didn’t create on our own

The voice of the Spirit is never chaoticnever condemning, and always aligns with Scripture.

“Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it.’”

—Isaiah 30:21

🔇 4. Sometimes, we struggle to hear because of noise.

Things that can muffle His voice:

  • Distraction
  • Constant noise or busyness
  • Sin or hardened areas of the heart
  • Unbelief or fear
  • Trying to make God say what we want to hear

Hearing Jesus well begins with quietness and surrender.

🔔 5. His voice grows clearer through familiarity.

Just like a child recognizes their mother’s voice over all others…

You learn to recognize Jesus’ voice by spending time with Him.

  • Reading His Word with your heart open
  • Talking with Him throughout the day
  • Paying attention to what aligns with His character and peace

You begin to sense: â€œThat sounds like Jesus.”

Or sometimes: â€œThat doesn’t feel like Him at all.”

“But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”

—Hebrews 5:14

We learn by use. By practice. By closeness.

🎨 6. He may speak through unexpected things—but He never contradicts Himself.

God has used:

  • A burning bush 🌿
  • A donkey 🐴
  • A whisper in the wind 🌬️
  • A dream in the night 🌙
  • A child’s voice 👧
  • A verse we didn’t expect to read 📖

So He may use a song, a walk in the garden, a memory, or a special photo.

But whatever He uses, it will never go against His written Word.

That’s how you can trust it’s really Him.

⏳ 7. He doesn’t rush—He invites.

Jesus doesn’t shout, demand, or manipulate.

His voice is always gentle, true, and deeply respectful of your soul.

A painting depicting Jesus gently knocking on a wooden door, surrounded by ivy and stone walls.
  • He waits for you to listen.
  • He repeats Himself when you’re too tired to catch it.
  • He walks with you until you’re ready to hear it.

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock…”

—Revelation 3:20

I have always loved this verse because as a child a sweet neighbor lady had a beautiful picture of Jesus at a door with no knob, softly knocking. I was intrigued by it from early childhood that we had to let him in instead of him opening the door.

He’s not pounding. He’s knocking. He wants welcome, not submission under pressure.

That’s the full picture of what I believe we should offer in this second post:

  • Yes, He speaks.
  • Yes, you can hear Him.
  • And yes, it gets clearer the more you abide.
