Teach Me, Lord — A Study with Bonnie Moore

📖 Scripture Reading (NKJV)

John 12:12–19
12 The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out:
“Hosanna!
‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’
The King of Israel!”
14 Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written:
15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion;
Behold, your King is coming,
Sitting on a donkey’s colt.”
16 His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him.
17 Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness.
18 For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign.
19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, “You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!”

🔍 Observational Insights

  • 👥 A multitude gathers, shouting with excitement and waving palm branches as Jesus enters Jerusalem.
  • 🌿 They cry out from Psalm 118 — but likely misunderstood its full meaning.
  • 🐾 Jesus enters on a donkey’s colt, fulfilling Zechariah 9:9 and showing He is a humble, peaceful King — not a political conqueror.
  • 🤯 The disciples don’t understand it all until after the resurrection.
  • 🧍‍♂️ Witnesses of Lazarus’ resurrection spread word, drawing many to Jesus.
  • 😠 The Pharisees panic, fearing loss of control, saying, “The world has gone after Him!”

🕰️ Historical and Cultural Background

  • Palm branches were symbols of Jewish nationalism and victory — often waved to celebrate kings or military heroes.
  • Hosanna means “Save now!” — originally a plea for deliverance, later used as an expression of praise.
  • Passover crowds would have been enormous — possibly hundreds of thousands of pilgrims.
  • Zechariah 9:9 prophesied that Israel’s King would come riding lowly on a donkey, not with a sword.

🗝️ Key Word Study

  • Hosanna (Greek: hosanna) – From Hebrew hosianna, meaning “Save us, please!” — both a cry and a praise.
  • King (Greek: basileus) – One with royal authority; the crowd likely expected political or national deliverance.
  • Colt (Greek: polos) – A young donkey, symbolizing peace and gentleness, not war or pride.

🔍 Theological Themes

  • 👑 Jesus is King — but not the kind they expected. He rules with humility, not force.
  • 📜 Prophecy fulfilled – Jesus intentionally fulfills Scripture, yet many do not recognize it.
  • 🧠 True understanding comes later – Even the disciples needed time and the Spirit to grasp what happened.
  • ⚖️ Religious resistance intensifies – As truth is revealed, opposition becomes more severe.

🔗 Old Testament Connections

  • Psalm 118:25–26 – “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes…” — a Messianic declaration sung at feasts.
  • Zechariah 9:9 – “Behold, your King… riding on a donkey.”
  • Isaiah 53:3 – Though praised here, Jesus will soon be “despised and rejected.”

✨ Thoughtful Reflection Questions

  1. What kind of king do I expect Jesus to be in my life — and am I open to His way of peace and humility?
  2. How do I respond when I don’t understand what Jesus is doing in the moment?
  3. Am I more like the crowd, wanting signs, or the disciples, following even in confusion?
  4. Where is Jesus still gently fulfilling prophecy in ways I have yet to fully see?
