🤝 Exodus 22:7–15 — Safekeeping, Borrowing, and Trust

📖 Scripture (NKJV)

7 “If a man delivers to his neighbor money or articles to keep, and it is stolen out of the man’s house, if the thief is found, he shall pay double. 8 If the thief is not found, then the master of the house shall be brought to the judges to see whether he has put his hand into his neighbor’s goods. 9 “For any kind of trespass, whether it concerns an ox, a donkey, a sheep, or clothing, or for any kind of lost thing which another claims to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; and whomever the judges condemn shall pay double to his neighbor. 10 If a man delivers to his neighbor a donkey, an ox, a sheep, or any animal to keep, and it dies, is hurt, or driven away, no one seeing it, 11 then an oath of the LORD shall be between them both, that he has not put his hand into his neighbor’s goods; and the owner of it shall accept that, and he shall not make it good. 12 But if, in fact, it is stolen from him, he shall make restitution to the owner of it. 13 If it is torn to pieces by a beast, then he shall bring it as evidence, and he shall not make good what was torn. 14 “And if a man borrows anything from his neighbor, and it becomes injured or dies, the owner of it not being with it, he shall surely make it good. 15 If its owner was with it, he shall not make it good; if it was hired, it came for its hire.

🧠 Context & Overview

These verses deal with everyday things surrounding trustlending items, trusting someone for the safekeeping of borrowed goods, items, animals, etc. This shows us how God wants to teach people to be honest in their dealings with each other and accountable when things go awry.

Community relationships are extremely important/essential to this people – they depended on trust. God is giving them a system for dealing with disputes and making restitution that will make good on both sides when troubles pop up. Justice and Integrity for both parties is important.

💡 Key Observations

🔐 Entrusting Property to a Neighbor (vv. 7–9)

If you leave something with your neighbor and it is stolen:

  • Thief caught → they pay double
  • Thief not found → the neighbor may have to stand trial to prove they didn’t steal it.

⚖️ A law to protect the property owner and stands against false accusations

✋ Oaths and Evidence (vv. 10–13)

  •  If no one witnesses the loss of a borrowed or entrusted animal, the caretaker can swear an oath before God that they didn’t steal or misuse it.
  • However, if they cannot prove it was stolen, then they have to repay.
  • If a wild animal killed it, they bring the remains to prove the cause and no repayment is made.

👉 Justice isn’t simply about outcomes — it’s about intent, integrity, and transparency.

🧺 Borrowing vs. Hiring (vv. 14–15)

Now this sign can be found in almost any do-dad shop where fragile things are and it is funny to think about but it really does harken back to this verse if you think about it.

If you borrow a thing/animal and it gets damaged/injured or dies, you must repay for it.

But if the owner is with it or it was rented and that was “part of the deal”, no repayment is required.

💡 This shows God values fair agreements. He distinguishes between borrowed (a favor) and hired (a paid service).

✍️ Hebrew Highlights

• â€œDelivers to his neighbor” = nāᚯan el-rēʿēhĹŤ (נָתַן אֶל־רֵעֵהוּ) — to give to a friend.

➤ This wording shows the personal trust involved.

• â€œOath of the Lord” = ĹĄÉ™bÝʿaᚯ YHWH (שְׁבוּעַת יְהוָה)
