📜 Exodus 20:1–2 — The God Who Speaks and Saves

1. And God spoke these words: saying: 2. “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.”

🗣️ Verse 1 — “God spoke all these words…”

💡 Observation:

This is the first and only time in the whole bible that God makes an audible speech directly to the whole nation of Israel, not through a prophet.

📖 Hebrew Note:

• “Words” here is דְּבָרִים (devarim)—not just commands, but meaningful, living sayings or statements.

• That’s why the commandments are often called the “Ten Words” (Aseret haDibrot) in Hebrew.

📌 Insight:

It is a foundational moment: God is not silent. He reveals Himself here, clearly. These are not man-made laws but divine words from God.

👑 Verse 2 — “I am the Lord your God…”

• Before anything else He reminds them exactly who he is to them and what He has done.
• It isn’t a matter of obey me and I will save you. It is, I already saved you-now live with me in a relationship built on obedience and faith.
• God is declaring Himself as the liberator—the One who sets people free. 🙌🔓

💬 Reflection

• 🧠 This harkens back to a previous post where I was talking about fear. We do not fear in a cowering sort of way but in a reverent and grateful way that shows our response to all the gifts we have been given.
• God gives His commands after rescuing, not before. Obedience flows from gratitude, not fear.
• 🙏 “Do I see God’s commands as rules from a dictator… or words from a Deliverer?”
• 💬 These opening verses remind us: God wants relationship—and that relationship begins with knowing who He is.
