Section 2: Exodus 19:7–15 — Israel Prepares to Meet God
• Moses conveys God’s message; the people accept.
• Instructions on how to prepare—purification, boundaries.
📖 Exodus 19:7–15 (NKJV)
7 So Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before them all these words which the Lord commanded him. 8 Then all the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.” So Moses brought back the words of the people to the Lord. 9 And the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I come to you in the thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and believe you forever.” So Moses told the words of the people to the Lord. 10 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes. 11 And let them be ready for the third day. For on the third day the Lord will come down upon Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12 You shall set bounds for the people all around, saying, ‘Take heed to yourselves that you do not go up to the mountain or touch its base. Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. 13 Not a hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot with an arrow; whether man or beast, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come near the mountain.” 14 So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes. 15 And he said to the people, “Be ready for the third day; do not come near your wives.”
🔎 Verse 7 – “Moses… laid before them all these words”
- Moses gathered the elders, delivered God’s words which the Lord commanded.
- Moses gave these words as from God without embellishment or his own ideas.
🔎 Verse 8 – “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.”
- Despite seeming enthusiastic to agree, their words seem overzealous as seen in Exodus 32 with the golden calf.
- This moment marks the beginning of a covenant—a commitment that involves an obedient relationship with God.
🔎 Verse 9 – “That the people may hear… and believe you forever”
- The word for “believe” (אָמַן, aman) implies trust, reliability, and being established. The goal is that Israel will firmly trust Moses’ leadership moving forward.
- God is planning to speak aloud so that the people can hear and recognize Moses’ role as a prophet and mediator.
- This will be a confirmation for Moses to help build trust in God’s chosen servant.
🔎 Verses 10–11 – “Consecrate them today and tomorrow…”
- Preparation is required before the people can come near God
- Consecration involves:
- Washing clothes (symbol of purification)
- Abstaining from sexual relations (see v. 15)
- A mindset of reverence and readiness
God’s holiness requires preparation. We cannot just enter his presence casually without it. While we now approach God through Christ, the principle still stands: heart-preparation matters in worship.
🔎 Verses 12–13 – “Set bounds… whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death”
- Just like with the ground around the Burning Bush the mountain becomes holy because of God’s presence.
- There is a clear boundary between God’s space and where humans are able to go.
I once heard it put that “God isn’t our buddy.” We must never treat His presence as if it is without the necessary reverence. So to show Him the appropriate honor and respect for his holiness at that time, the cleanliness was of utmost importance.
🔎 Verse 14 – “Sanctified the people… they washed their clothes”
- The washing of the garments then = the cleansing of the heart now through Jesus Christ
- This outward action reflected the inward reverence.
NT Connection:
Revelation 7:14 believers have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb.
🔎 Verse 15 – “Do not come near your wives.”
- This is not about sexual misconduct as much as being full of concentration and separation for a sacred encounter.
- They were to be fully focused on God setting aside all distractions to be in God’s presence.
